Sovereign

Gold sovereigns are arguably the most popular bullion coins in the world. Due to the heritage of the Commonwealth nations, this gold coin enjoys a high resale value beyond Europe. The sovereign was first minted in 1489 at the request of King Henry VII of England with no face value. In 1817, during the reign of George III, the nominal value of the modern sovereign will become one pound sterling. The engraver Benedetto Pistrucci will be in charge of designing the reverse of the new generation sovereign. The obverse of the sovereign features the effigy of the monarch of the era in which it was minted. The reverse represents the figure of Saint George on his horse slaying a dragon. In 1914, the English sovereign was taken out of circulation and replaced by paper money. Minting resumed in 1957. During this unstable period, the sovereign continued to be minted in various workshops around the world and identified by the letter on the coin. For example: Perth (P), Bombay (I), Sydney (S), Ottawa (C), Melbourne (M) South Africa (AS)
