Liberty

Libertad coins are silver and gold bullion coins originating in Mexico and minted by La Casa de Moneda de México (Mexican Mint). The Mexican Mint was created in 1535 and is the oldest in the Americas. Modern coins are 99.9% silver or gold (0.999 fineness) and come in different sizes. Both metal parts have undergone a design change. In 1989, 3,500 1⁄4 ounce platinum Libertad coins were produced. Libertads have no face value, but are still accepted as currency and guaranteed by the Banco de México on the basis of the market value of its gold or silver content. For Mexicans, the Libertad is the symbol of freedom in their victory in the War of Independence (1810-1821) that the country waged against Spanish colonial rule.
