American Buffalo

Description

The one-ounce American Buffalo gold coin is the first 24-karat (999.9) gold coin ever struck by the US Mint. It has a nominal value of $50 US, its diameter is 32.70mm and its thickness is 2.95mm. Since its creation in 2006, it has been issued only in the 1 troy ounce (31.1035g) format. Its reverse depicts a powerful Bison and on the "obverse", the head of a Native American that was designed by James Earle Fraser who is none other than the student of the legendary sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The Buffalo gold is legal tender in the United States and its purchase is not always easy due to the high demand and explains a higher premium than on other investment coins.
