American Eagle

The American Eagle gold is among the most popular bullion coins in the world. It originated in 1795 when a coin bearing the name Eagle was minted for the first time in the United States. It was an official means of payment in the USA until the prohibition of gold in 1933.

The first coin was issued in 1986 by the US Mint. It is officially a part of the United States of America and guaranteed by it. On a design by Augustus Saint Gaudens, the obverse represents the goddess of freedom "Lady Liberty". On the back, based on an idea by Miley Busiek, is a bald eagle with an olive branch in its claw which is a sign of peace.

Until 1991 the years of issue are stamped in Roman numerals. From 1992, the date is struck in Arabic numerals.

In 2020, to mark the 35th anniversary of American Gold Eagle history. The US Mint has introduced a new design, on the back is an enlarged eagle's head. This one is designed by designer Jennie Norris. The new Eagle design will be available on coins issued in 2021.
