The Saint Gaudens "Double Eagle" is a $20 gold coin that was minted from 1907 to 1933. Between 1917 and 1919 there was no minting. It takes its name from its sculptor Saint Gaudens, their introduction was initiated by President Roosevelt. The design on the obverse of the gold coin depicts the goddess of liberty holding a torch and a branch. The Capitol can be seen in the background. Initially it was designed with 46 stars before 1912 and then evolved to 48 stars when New Mexico and Arizona joined the group. In 1907, the year of issue was engraved in Roman numerals and then in Arabic numerals. On the reverse of the gold coin is engraved the flying bald eagle and the United States of America. From 1909 onwards, the motto "In God We Trust" appears. The edge of the coin features 13 stars from the Founding States.
