The 1 oz pure gold coin (9999‰) "Maple Leaf" is issued annually by the Royal Canadian Mint. It has a diameter of 30mm by 3mm thick and a nominal value of $50 Canadian. The universal motifs of the coin are the "Maple Leaf" symbol of Canada and the Portrait of Queen Elizabeth II until 2023. The portrait of King Charles III will appear on the coins from the year 2024.
Its first strike dates back to 1979 and until 1982 when it was struck in the unique format of one ounce with a fineness of 999. It was in November 1982 that it was elected the first coin in the world to reach the fineness of 9999 gold. The 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz denominations were released from 1982 to 1985.
From 1986 to 1992 the 1/2 oz denomination appeared, then other denominations 1/20 oz, 1/15 oz and 1 gram came out. In May 2007, the Royal Canadian Mint struck the "Big Maple Leaf" with a nominal value of $1,000,000 CAD and a metal value of over $3.5 million. With a diameter of 50cm and a thickness of 3cm, a weight of 100kg and a fineness of 99.999%
At the time, the only competing investment coin was the Krugerrand. The latter was boycotted following Apartheid in South Africa, which propelled the Maple Leaf as the best alternative.
