HISTORY OF THE 20 FRANCS COQ MARIANNE

The gold coin "Coq Marianne", the 20 francs is part of the Napoleon series which was struck in "117,448,888 copies" from 1898 to 1914 and 1951 to 1960. There are two different variants on these gold coins. Following the separation of power between the State and the Church, the coins struck from 1899 to 1906 bear the words "DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE" and from 1907 until 1914, the words "LIBERTE EGALITE FRATERNITE". On the obverse, there is the portrait of Marianne wearing a Phrygian cap and a crown of oak leaves and the words "République Francaise" and the signature of "J.C Chaplain" its engraver. On the reverse, we can see a "Rooster" walking proudly as well as the face value "20 francs" as well as the French motto "LIBERTE, EGALITE, FRATERNITE" The 20 francs Rooster Marianne is the last coin of the great series of Napoleons to have been produced. We cannot close the chapter without mentioning the "Refrappes Pinay" in fact during the two great world wars, a massive quantity of gold disappeared, in order to fill this deficit, a re-strike was decided. 37,483,500 copies were re-strike between 1951 and 1960. There is a visible difference easily recognizable to the naked eye between the re-strike and the old version: a more coppery tint.

WHERE TO BUY AND SELL THE 20 FRANCS ROOSTER MARIANNE ?

It is known by many French people that selling your gold in Belgium is very advantageous. Indeed, Belgium does not apply the 11.5% Tax on precious metals (TMP). The current price in 2024 of the Napoleon is 455 euros, by selling just "one coin in Belgium you will earn at least 55€". Paradoxically, it is in France that there are the most gold Napoleon coins in circulation, but it is in Belgium that we find the best prices to buy. At Metal24, a family and friendly business, we will be happy to advise you in the purchase or resale and without obligation.
