History
The design pays homage to the largest alluvial gold nugget ever recorded (2,284 net ounces). It was unearthed in February 1869 at Moliagul, Victoria, by John Deason and Richard Oates.
Iconography and Markings
Obverse: Official portrait of His Majesty King Charles III drawn by Dan Thorne. Circular legends: "CHARLES III", "AUSTRALIA", and face value.
Reverse: Central depiction of the "Welcome Stranger" nugget surrounded by the outline of Australia and stylized rays. Inscriptions: "THE AUSTRALIAN NUGGET", name of the nugget, year of issue, weight, purity, and mint mark "P40".
